WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE ......

Halcyon Trust was established in 2004 in order to advance education of the pupils of Halcyon High School, a mixed boarding and day secondary school in the Soroti district of Uganda and to support the education of the students.

Soroti lies on the southern side of an area which until recently has been plagued by a long running civil war.  Thousands of people have lost their homes with many family members being killed or abducted by rebel forces.

Halcyon School was founded by Jim and Lorna Stirland (two of the trustees) with Hellen Adoa, a well respected local Ugandan.  Between them, they drew on over ten years of experience supporting various rural development and education projects.  Building work began in the August 2000 and by February 2001, 110 students had been enrolled.

PEACE IS A KEY TO QUALITY EDUCATION ........

The school derives its name from 'halcyon days' meaning past times that were idyllically happy and peaceful.  It is our intention that Halcyon students will one day look back and remember their halcyon days as a stark contrast to what some of their parents have suffered.

Halcyon is also the name of an East African kingfisher (Halcyon Senegalensis).  We have used the bird in the schools emblem and taken it's colouration in the students' uniform and to decorate the buildings.

Funding from the U.K. has enabled a substantial building programme to take place over the years as well as help develop the newly opened Teso Boarding Primary School on the same site.  Future funding will be used to complete this programme and provide additional scholastic materials at both centres, in line with the Ugandan Government Education Directives.  In addition to funding, links with U.K. schools give opportunities for cross-cultural communications between students,  and the exchange of managerial techniques, teaching skills and student welfare.
